Dry Stone Walling

Overview

Dry Stone Walling is the ancient art of building walls and structures WITHOUT the use of glues or mortars to hold them together.  Most famously seen throughout Scotland, England, and Ireland, Dry Stone Wall construction can actually be found throughout the world, including places as far reaching as Peru, Turkey, and Africa.

The technique involves intricately fitting each stone in such a way that it is supported by the ones below, and braced by the ones above, allowing for flexing and movement due to weather, freeze-thaw cycles, and ground heaves.  Thus, Dry Stone structures will always last FAR longer than solid structures that are prone to cracking and breaking.

We always say that a mortared wall will collapse if the mortar fails, but since gravity is what holds a Dry Stone Wall together, if gravity fails, there are larger concerns!

Training

Wolfegang Bonham apprenticed for 2 years in Dry Stone Walling with the Dry Stone Wall Association of Canada before becoming a Certified Dry Stone Waller through the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

At present there are less than a dozen Certified Dry Stone Wallers in Ontario.  As a result, Wolfe approaches each walling job with patience and the eye for detail that only a true artisan brings.  He, and the rest of the crew at Peace, Love, and Landscaping, would be honoured to create a natural Dry Stone Feature on your property.

Walls

Traditional Dry Stone Walls come in a variety of styles both regionally, and based on the types of stones available.  Generally speaking they are 4’ high, with 30” wide bases.  The most famous Dry Stone Wall is Hadrian’s Wall in Scotland.  Ideal for rural or woodland properties, Dry Stone Walls naturally blend into a lush garden environment.

Retaining Walls

Dry Stone Walls make excellent retaining walls because of their ability to shift and move without cracking or breaking.  Also, because of the openings between stones they do not hold water behind them, which can expand when frozen, placing huge stresses on a wall structure, or erode to the wall’s base.  We have built quite a few large scale Dry Stone Retaining Walls for customers using a wide range of materials such as fieldstone, rip-rap, and quarried angular limestone.

Arches

Dry Stone Arches are by far the most dramatic structures, and clients are awe-struck when seeing them being built.  Using a wooden frame to get the basic shape, gravity does the rest.  We can build entry gate arches large enough to walk through, or incorporate smaller windows into Dry Stone Walls.  We can even build foot bridges over streams or creeks that have a natural look and blend into their surroundings seamlessly.

Other Features

Other Dry Stone Features include Kairns, Pillars, Spheres, or just about anything else you can imagine.  If you have an idea for a truly unique and timeless Dry Stone Garden Feature we would love to discuss it with you.
