A pergola is the quickest way to make a deck or patio feel like a room: shade, a frame for lights and curtains, and some privacy from above. It is also a structure that has to take our wind and snow. The price depends mostly on three things: material, size and whether the posts sit on their own footings or on a deck frame that was never designed for them.

A light cedar pergola can be carried by a well-built deck frame if the posts are through-bolted to the joists or rim with solid blocking, and the deck's own footings are sound. A louvered aluminum roof is much heavier, carries snow when closed and takes serious wind uplift. It should sit on its own footings, with the posts coming up through the decking. If you are building a new deck and think you will ever want a pergola, have the footings put in now. It is far cheaper than cutting them in later.

For a dining area that you want to use in the rain, a louvered roof or a gazebo makes sense. For shade over a lounge area, a light-filtering pergola, or a pergola with a retractable canopy, is usually enough and costs much less.
Do you need a permit for a pergola?
It depends on size, whether it is attached to the house and your city.
- Hamilton. The city says a detached accessory structure that serves a house, such as a gazebo or pergola, does not need a building permit if it is no more than 15 m2, one storey and has no plumbing. For other uses, the limit is 10 m2. See Hamilton residential accessory buildings.
- Burlington and Oakville. Both publish rules for small accessory structures that do not need a permit. Check the current size limits with the building department before you order.
- Attached to the house. A pergola or roof tied into the house wall is generally treated as part of the house and needs a permit.
- On a permitted deck. A structure added to a deck can change what the deck has to carry. Ask the city whether your deck permit needs a revision.
- Zoning always applies. Even without a building permit, setbacks, height limits and lot coverage in the zoning by-law still apply.

- Footings below frost. About 1.2 m (4 ft) in our region. Shallow footings let the pergola heave and rack.
- 6x6 posts, not 4x4. 4x4 posts twist and look thin at pergola height. 6x6 is the standard for a freestanding wood pergola.
- Bracing. Knee braces or rigid post-to-beam connections stop the frame swaying in wind.
- Snow. Open slats shed most snow. Louvered and solid roofs have a snow load rating. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for winter.
- Hardware. Galvanized or stainless connectors rated for treated lumber.
- Clearance. Keep fire features and barbecues within the maker's clearances from any overhead structure.
Pergola ideas that work
- Half-covered deck. A pergola over the dining half of the deck only, leaving the rest open to sun.

- Climbing plants. Clematis, climbing hydrangea or grapevine on a wood pergola for natural shade.
- Lighting. String lights or integrated LED strips in the beams. Plan the wiring before the frame goes up.
- Over an outdoor kitchen. A louvered roof over the cooking area, with clearances matched to the grill.
- Freestanding in the garden. A pergola over a paver seating area at the back of the yard, as a destination away from the house.
Where the cheap quote is cutting
- Posts bolted to deck boards. They work loose in the first windy season.
- No footings or shallow ones. Ask how deep they go.
- 4x4 posts on a tall pergola. Cheaper, weaker and they twist.
- No bracing. The frame racks over time.
- A kit rated for mild climates. Check the snow and wind rating on aluminum and louvered systems.
- Size not checked against the permit threshold. A foot or two can put you over.
