Hamilton-Wentworth is our home. Every neighbourhood listed on this page is one we have worked in, and the patterns of the land, the soil and the homes are second nature to us. This hub covers all the communities in the region, with deeper city pages for the four we get asked about most. If you cannot find your community below, you are still in our area, just send the contact form.
Cities and communities we serve
The amalgamated City of Hamilton stretches from the Lake Ontario shoreline up onto the Niagara Escarpment and out to the rural south. The character of a landscape project changes dramatically across that geography. These are the pockets we work, in plain language.
Hamilton
The core city, on both sides of the escarpment. From the older brick walk-ups of the lower city through the post-war bungalows of the Mountain, we know which lots have clay, which need new grading, and which streets have the narrow access that decides whether a patio job needs a small skid or hand work. See our Hamilton page.
Ancaster
Set high on the escarpment ridge, Ancaster mixes Meadowlands new-builds, heritage Old Ancaster Village homes and high-end lots through Spring Valley and Ancaster Heights. Soil tends to clay, properties tend to be larger, and the design briefs lean toward custom curb appeal that holds value. See our Ancaster page.
Dundas
Tucked into the valley at the foot of the escarpment with Spencer Creek running through, Dundas has the oldest housing stock in the region and the trickiest grades. Heritage Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes, narrow lots, mature trees and the proximity of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area shape every project here. See our Dundas page.
Stoney Creek
The shoreline community east of the city, climbing from the Lake Ontario edge up onto the escarpment terraces above. Older sections around Battlefield and Winona sit alongside the newer Fruitland and South Stoney Creek subdivisions. Soil quality is excellent in the lower fruit-belt plain. See our Stoney Creek page.
Waterdown and Flamborough
North of the escarpment, Waterdown sits in the older village core with newer subdivisions spilling outward; Flamborough adds large country lots, conservation properties and the kind of acreage where drainage and tree care matter as much as the patio. We work both. Most jobs out here are full design-builds rather than spot projects.
Glanbrook, Binbrook and Mount Hope
The rural south of the city, a mix of small village cores and large agricultural lots, with newer subdivisions in Binbrook around the Lake Niapenco area. Wide-open sky, big yards, and the freedom to design ambitiously without the lot-line constraints of the lower city. Drainage and grading dominate the early planning.
Our landscaping services in the Hamilton-Wentworth region
As a full-service landscaper we cover every part of your the Hamilton-Wentworth region property, from the first interlocking patio paver to the last LED in the garden. Here is what each service looks like when we deliver it locally.
Interlocking patios & driveways
Paver patios, driveways and walkways built on a deep granular base with polymeric jointing, so they flex through Ontario freeze-thaw instead of cracking like poured concrete. Individual stones can be lifted and re-laid, which is why a properly built interlocking surface still looks sharp twenty years later. More on interlocking patios & driveways.
Landscape design & build
If you want to rethink the whole yard, our design-build service takes a the Hamilton-Wentworth region property from concept to completion. We plan around your sun, slope, drainage and how you actually use the space, then build it with one team so the vision stays intact. More on landscape design & build.
Retaining walls & hardscaping
Engineered block and natural stone walls with proper footings and drainage. The hidden parts decide whether a wall stands for decades or fails in five years, and that is where we spend the time. More on retaining walls & hardscaping.
Garden building & planting
Beds, borders and raised gardens with hardy, climate-suited plants, properly prepped soil and clean edging. We build gardens to be full from day one and easy to keep up. More on garden building & planting.
Landscape lighting
Low-voltage LED path lighting, uplighting and patio lighting to make a the Hamilton-Wentworth region home safer and far more striking after dark, using very little energy. More on landscape lighting.
Snow removal
Residential driveway and walkway clearing and salting, with seasonal contracts so you do not have to think about every snowfall. More on snow removal.
What is different about landscaping in Hamilton-Wentworth
Two features shape every project here: the Niagara Escarpment that splits the city in half, and the clay-heavy soil that runs through most of the older neighbourhoods. The escarpment creates grade changes that decide where retaining walls sit, where water runs and what the upper-vs-lower city sun exposure looks like. The clay decides how deep we excavate for patio bases and how we handle drainage so foundations stay dry through spring melt.
Permit-wise, the entire amalgamated City of Hamilton (Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Flamborough and Glanbrook all included since 2001) operates under the same by-laws. Most residential landscaping does not need a permit, but retaining walls over a certain height, work near conservation lands, and anything affecting drainage to the street can require one. We handle the back-and-forth where it comes up.
How we work
Every project follows the same clear, low-stress path. It starts with a free on-site visit where we listen to your goals, walk the property and talk through options and rough budget. You then get a written quote that spells out the scope, the materials and the price. Once you approve it, we book a start date, protect your property, do the work to a proper standard, and finish by walking the project with you so you know exactly what was done and how to care for it.
Frequently asked questions
Which Hamilton-area communities do you serve?
All of the amalgamated City of Hamilton: the lower city and the Mountain, plus Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, Flamborough, Glanbrook, Binbrook and Mount Hope. Each of the four main cities has its own dedicated page linked above; the smaller communities are served the same way, just without a separate page.
Do you work both above and below the Niagara Escarpment?
Yes. The crew works the lower city, the Mountain and the entire ridge of older Ancaster, Dundas Valley and Stoney Creek terraces. Working escarpment lots well is one of the things you learn from doing it for years, not from a manual.
Are there different permit rules for landscaping across the amalgamated City of Hamilton?
By-laws are uniform across the amalgamated city, but interpretations and approvals can vary by neighbourhood, particularly around heritage districts in Dundas and conservation-adjacent lots in Ancaster and Flamborough. We flag anything that needs a permit before you sign the quote, never after.
How long has Peace Love been working in the Hamilton area?
Since 2008. The team is local. The roster of past projects across the region is the most reliable thing we own.
If my community is not on the list, can you still help?
Almost certainly yes. The list above is the named communities. We will travel anywhere in the amalgamated City of Hamilton and the immediate surroundings. Send the contact form and we will tell you within a day.

Climate, soil and what they mean for landscape design here
Hamilton-Wentworth runs through five identifiable landscape zones in a relatively short north-south distance, and each one shifts the design palette.
The lower city (Westdale, Kirkendall, Strathcona, Durand, east end): mostly heavy clay over shale, mature canopy, narrow lots in the older neighbourhoods. Patio bases need extra depth, drainage planning is non-negotiable, and the planting palette leans toward clay-tolerant plants (yew, boxwood, hosta, hellebore).
The Mountain (Eastmount through to upper Stoney Creek): clay over limestone bedrock, post-war housing on rectangular lots, often easier access than the lower city. The standard Mountain backyard rebuild has different cost dynamics than the same brief in the lower city.
Ancaster and Dundas: escarpment-ridge and escarpment-valley respectively. Grade changes dominate the design conversation. Retaining walls become a routine part of almost every project.
Stoney Creek: three zones in one. Lakeshore plain (fruit-belt loam, opens the palette), escarpment terraces (sloped, walled), and upper rural ridge (back to heavier clay).
Rural south (Glanbrook, Binbrook, Mount Hope): agricultural land repurposed for housing. Large lots, broad design moves, drainage planning before everything else.
The most common Hamilton-Wentworth project types
Across hundreds of projects in the region, four types dominate.
Front-yard refresh on older urban homes: the highest-volume project. Removing tired 1980s-90s foundation planting, refreshing the walkway, and rebuilding the planting beds. Typically $6,000-$15,000.
Backyard transformation: a patio plus planting plus often a small retaining wall, scaled to the lot size. $15,000-$45,000 in the lower city or on the Mountain, higher in Ancaster.
Escarpment terracing: the speciality work. Properties with real grade get terraced into usable rooms via engineered walls. $25,000-$80,000.
Drainage and grading fix: often combined with a new patio. Water in the basement is a real Hamilton problem on clay soil; we solve it with proper grading, French drains, and downspout management. $5,000-$20,000.
More questions about the region
Is the Niagara Escarpment a big factor in my project?
If your property is on the ridge (Ancaster, Mountain edge, parts of Stoney Creek) or in the valley (Dundas, parts of Hamilton lower city), yes. Grade changes dictate the design and often the cost. If your lot is flat, it is a non-issue.
Do you serve all of the amalgamated City of Hamilton?
Yes. The full City of Hamilton, from the lakeshore to the rural south, is our service area. That includes Hamilton city, Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown and Flamborough, Glanbrook, Binbrook and Mount Hope.
Does the heritage building register affect my landscaping?
It can. Some Durand, Kirkendall, downtown Hamilton and Old Dundas properties are designated. Front-yard changes visible from the street can require heritage conservation district approval. We check the address against the register before we sign a quote.
Are there cost differences between the lower city, the Mountain and Ancaster?
Per-square-metre paver rates are the same. Per-project total tends to be higher in Ancaster because lot sizes are larger and material selections are usually higher-grade. Lower city work sometimes has access challenges (narrow lots, no rear entry) that add labour time.
