Quick answer: A seasonal snow removal contract in Hamilton for 2026-27 costs about $540 to $720 for a typical two-car driveway, or $780 to $1,080 with the walkway cleared and salted. Most contracts run November 15 to April 15 and trigger at 5 cm of snow. Unlike Oakville and Burlington, Hamilton makes homeowners clear the public sidewalk in front of their property within 24 hours of a storm ending, under By-law 03-296, so in Hamilton it pays to put the sidewalk in the contract. Sign by late October, before the first storm fills the routes.

Hamilton gets more snow than the rest of the western GTA, and it does not fall evenly. A storm that leaves 15 cm at the airport can bury Ancaster or the Mountain brow under twice that. Here is what snow removal costs across the city this winter, what the city expects you to clear, and what a contract that actually shows up should include.

Hamilton rules every homeowner should know

You clear the sidewalk, within 24 hours

Hamilton's Snow Removal By-law 03-296 requires every owner or occupant to clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of, beside or behind their lot within 24 hours of the end of a winter storm. If you do not, the city can clear it and bill you, and unpaid costs are added to your property taxes. The city plows only part of the network itself, about 397 km of roughly 2,445 km of sidewalks, mostly main routes. On most residential streets, the sidewalk is yours. Corner lots have two.

Do not push snow onto the road

The same by-law bans putting snow on or next to the travelled part of the road, and on or around a fire hydrant. Contractors who blow driveway snow across the street are breaking it. A good crew piles snow on your property, away from the hydrant, the sightline at the end of the driveway and the storm drain.

The windrow at the end of the driveway

Hamilton does not run a windrow clearing service. When the city plow passes, the ridge of heavy snow across the end of your driveway is yours to clear. Every quality contract includes a return visit for it. Income-tested seniors and people with disabilities can apply for the city's snow clearing subsidy, which helps pay for sidewalk, path and windrow clearing.

Faz says: In Hamilton, ask every quote one question: does it include the city sidewalk? Half the cheap quotes do the driveway and walk to the door and leave the public sidewalk, which is the part the by-law officer actually looks at.

How much snow Hamilton gets

Environment and Climate Change Canada climate normals put Hamilton airport at about 156.5 cm of snow a year, with around 9 days a year bringing 5 cm or more in a single day. That is roughly 50 percent more than Toronto Pearson. The escarpment makes it uneven. Easterly winds off Lake Ontario lift up the escarpment and drop far more snow at the top than below it. In one storm, Ancaster measured about 40 cm while the airport had 15 cm. So two quotes for the same size of driveway, one on the Mountain and one in the lower city, can be fairly priced differently.

Where we clear across Hamilton

  • Hamilton Mountain: the bulk of our routes, two-car driveways on 1960s to 1990s streets, and the brow gets the heaviest squalls.
  • Stoney Creek: lower Stoney Creek by the lake, and the upper benchland above the escarpment, which often gets a separate, heavier band.
  • Ancaster: longer driveways, slopes and estate lots, where salt and a second pass matter.
  • Dundas: valley streets with steep driveways and tight curbside room to pile snow.
  • Waterdown and Flamborough: newer subdivisions and long rural laneways.
  • Lower city and Westdale: narrow driveways and street parking, where timing around the city plow matters most.

What our Hamilton seasonal contract includes

  • Driveway cleared after every snowfall of 5 cm or more, November 15 to April 15.
  • Walkway, steps and the area at the door, where contracted.
  • The city sidewalk along your frontage, so you meet the 24 hour rule.
  • A return visit for the windrow left by the city plow.
  • Salt on the driveway, walk and steps, where contracted.
  • Service within 6 hours of the snow stopping or the trigger being reached, whichever is later.
  • Reflective stakes set before the season, and spring touch-up of any lawn edge damage.

If you want any snow and ice handled, not just storms over 5 cm, ask about a zero tolerance plan. It is priced above a standard contract. See our snow removal service for how each plan works.

When to sign in Hamilton

The first measurable snow usually arrives between November 12 and 25, and the Mountain often sees it a week before the lakeshore. Contractors fill their routes after that first storm, and late signers pay more or go on a waiting list. Our guide on when to book snow removal covers the timing in detail.

How much does snow removal cost in Hamilton?

About $540 to $720 for the 2026-27 season for a typical two-car driveway, or $780 to $1,080 with the walkway and salt. Single visits run $45 to $95. Long driveways in Ancaster and Flamborough cost more.

Do I have to shovel the sidewalk in Hamilton?

Yes. Hamilton By-law 03-296 requires owners or occupants to clear the sidewalk next to their property within 24 hours of the end of a storm. The city can clear it and bill you if you do not.

Does Hamilton clear driveway windrows?

No. The snowbank the city plow leaves across your driveway is yours to clear. Good contracts include a return visit for it, and income-tested seniors and people with disabilities can apply for the city's snow clearing subsidy.

Can I push snow onto the road in Hamilton?

No. By-law 03-296 bans putting snow on or next to the travelled part of the road, and on or near a fire hydrant.

What trigger depth do Hamilton contracts use?

Most use 5 cm (2 inches). A lower trigger means more visits and a higher price. A zero tolerance plan clears any accumulation and ice.

Yes, along with the Mountain, the lower city, Waterdown, Flamborough and Glanbrook.

When should I sign a snow removal contract in Hamilton?

By late October. The first snow usually comes between November 12 and 25, and routes fill up right after it.
