In Ontario, patio installation is a seasonal business. The crew can work year-round, but the conditions and the booking calendar both have rhythms. Here is when to install and when to book.
Season-by-season breakdown
Spring (April-May): the strongest window
By mid-April most years, the ground has thawed enough to excavate properly. Cool temperatures (10-20 C) are ideal for concrete sand setting, polymeric jointing and crew productivity. Spring rain is intermittent but predictable, and we plan around it. The downside is that prime spring slots book out quickly; if you want a May install, the conversation needs to start in February.
Summer (June-August): the workhorse season
The bulk of patio installation happens here. Long days, dry conditions, fastest builds. The trade-offs: peak demand means schedules are tight, and very hot days (28+ C) can affect polymeric sand activation (we time the activation for cooler evening hours). Pricing is full retail. Book by April for summer install.
Fall (September-October): underrated
Some of our best installs happen in September and early October. Temperatures are perfect, the ground is dry and well-drained, and demand drops off the peak. Pricing is sometimes 5 to 10% softer than peak summer. The risk is an early frost; by mid-October we start scheduling around the forecast.
Late fall (November) and winter (December-March): conditional
Excavation and base work become very difficult once the ground freezes (usually mid-November in Hamilton). Some projects can still happen if the ground has not frozen yet and the forecast cooperates. Pure planting and small refresh work continues longer than full builds. We do not lay pavers below about 4 C ambient because polymeric sand will not activate properly.
The booking calendar (lead times we actually see)
| Goal | Booking timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Want a May install? | Conversation by February. Quote signed by mid-March. | All slots usually gone by April. |
| Want a June or July install? | Conversation by March. Quote signed by April. | Most popular window; books out fast. |
| Want an August install? | Conversation by May. Quote signed by June. | Mid-summer demand is high but slightly more flexible. |
| Want a September install? | Conversation by July. Quote signed by August. | Underrated window; good availability. |
| Want an October install? | Conversation by August. Quote signed by September. | Weather risk increases late month. |
What about weather risk?
We watch the 10-day forecast on every active job. A surprise three-day rain stretch can pause a job mid-build (we never leave a partially excavated lot unprotected through heavy rain). Bigger weather windows (early-season freezes, summer drought, fall hurricane remnants) sometimes shift schedules by a few days. We absorb that risk in our pricing rather than nickel-and-dime it.
Does season affect cost?
Slightly. Peak summer (June, July) is full retail. Late spring and early fall are full retail. Late October and early April can run 5 to 10% below list if a slot opens up. The savings are smaller than people expect because materials and labour cost the same year-round; we just have a bit more flexibility on quieter weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Can a patio be installed in winter in Ontario?
Generally no, not properly. Frozen ground cannot be excavated to proper depth, and polymeric sand will not set below about 4 C ambient. Some preparation work can happen, but the build phase needs above-freezing temperatures.
Is spring or fall better for patio installation?
Both work well. Spring is more popular (homeowners want the patio for summer); fall is quieter (more scheduling flexibility) and often has equally good weather through September and early October.
What happens if it rains during my patio install?
We pause excavation if heavy rain is forecast, and we tarp the base work overnight if there is any chance of saturation. Light rain during paver installation is workable. Polymeric sand activation requires dry conditions; we time that step for a dry window.
How early should I book a summer patio install?
For May-June installs, start the conversation in February. For July-August installs, start in April. By the time the snow melts, prime slots are usually gone.
Can polymeric sand really not be installed in cold weather?
Correct. Polymeric sand needs ambient temperatures of roughly 4 C minimum and dry conditions to activate properly. Installing it below that compromises the joint locking and is a common shortcut on rushed late-fall jobs.
