A lot of Oakville's backyard fences went up with the subdivisions in Glen Abbey, River Oaks and West Oak Trails, and the original cedar is now 25 to 35 years old. Posts give out first, usually after a wet spring or a west wind off the lake. Most of these fences can be repaired for a while yet. Here is what it costs, and what the Town by-law really says about splitting the bill with your neighbour.
Oakville fence repair prices for 2026
| Repair | Typical 2026 price |
|---|---|
| Brace a leaning post that is still solid | $150 - $300 per post |
| Replace a rotted or snapped post | $250 - $450 per post |
| Dig out a heaved post and reset it below frost | $300 - $500 per post |
| Replace broken boards or pickets | $15 - $30 per linear foot |
| Replace 3 or 4 cedar panels | $400 - $900 |
| Rebuild a sagging gate | $200 - $600 |
| Swap a vinyl panel | $150 - $400 per panel |
| Chain link: re-stretch, splice, new top rail or post | $150 - $500 |
Each price covers materials, concrete footings, disposal of the old wood and cleanup. Expect a service minimum of about $250 to $400 for one small fix, so it pays to bundle a leaning post, a loose gate and a few boards into a single visit. New cedar will look brighter than the old for a season; if you stain, stain the whole run and the repair disappears.
What fails on Oakville fences
Posts rot at the soil line, where the wood stays wet, and posts set above the frost line heave. Frost here reaches about 1.2 m (4 ft), so a post set at 2 to 2.5 ft gets lifted by frozen clay each winter until it leans. The fix for a solid post that has tipped is a steel brace. The fix for a soft or heaved post is a new post in a footing below frost. A brace on a rotting post just hides the problem for a season.
In Bronte, College Park and Old Oakville, the other issue is trees. Big maples and oaks push fences over from below, and their roots make it hard to move a post. Oakville's Private Tree Protection By-law 2017-038 covers trees 15 cm in diameter and up across the town, so we check the trees near the line before we dig a new post hole beside one.
Who pays for a shared fence in Oakville
Talk to your neighbour first. Most shared fence repairs are settled with a conversation and a simple written split. When that fails, Oakville's Division Fence By-law 2023-076 sets the process, and the Line Fences Act no longer applies in the Town. The steps, from the by-law and the Town's procedural guide:
- Serve a notice of intent by registered mail or by hand. It must say whether you are building, replacing or repairing, include at least three written quotes and a full copy of the by-law.
- Wait 14 business days before work starts. Your neighbour can send you up to three quotes of their own within 10 business days.
- Do the work and pay the contractor. Your neighbour owes 50% of the basic cost.
- If they do not pay, send a registered notice giving 30 days, then you can take it to the Provincial Offences Court in Burlington.
The part people miss is how the by-law defines basic cost. It is the cost of the materials, plus tax, for a 1.2 m (4 ft) vinyl-coated chain link fence with posts every 3 m. It does not include labour. So if you repair a run of 6 ft cedar, your neighbour's required share is half of what the chain link materials would cost, not half of your invoice. Anything above that is a matter of agreement.
Damage, trees and pools
- Damage by an owner or their visitors: that owner pays the whole repair.
- Damage from a natural disaster: the repair is split equally.
- A tree falls on the fence: the owner of the land the tree stood on pays to remove it and repair the fence.
- Pool enclosure fences: the division fence by-law does not apply to fences built under the Pool Enclosure By-law 2006-071. A repaired pool fence still has to meet that by-law.
- Heritage districts: in Old Oakville and other heritage conservation districts, fence work still needs any heritage permit the district requires.
The Town does not step into fence disputes. If talking has broken down, free mediation is available through Community Conflict Resolution Services of Halton. Before any new post hole, we book a free locate through Ontario Dig Authority.
