Oakville has some of the most detailed driveway rules in the region, and they reach right down to the apron at the curb. That is not a reason to avoid interlock, which the Town explicitly allows on aprons south of Dundas, but it is a reason to plan the permit and the width before the excavator shows up. Here is what a paver driveway costs in Oakville, and the rules that shape it.
2026 interlock driveway prices in Oakville
| Driveway | Approx. area | Interlock, installed | Permeable pavers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single car | 300 sq ft | $7,200 - $12,600 | $8,400 - $14,400 |
| Standard two car | 600 sq ft | $14,400 - $25,200 | $16,800 - $28,800 |
| Long or wide two car | 900 sq ft | $21,600 - $37,800 | $25,200 - $43,200 |
Newer homes in north Oakville and River Oaks usually replace a builder asphalt drive of 500 to 650 sq ft. Old Oakville, Morrison and Eastlake properties often have long or circular drives over 900 sq ft, natural stone borders, and mature trees whose roots shape the dig. Large-format slabs, tumbled finishes and soldier courses in a contrasting colour push toward $42 per sq ft and beyond.
Common extras: removing old asphalt runs $1.50 to $2.75 per sq ft and old concrete $2.50 to $4.00, regrading so water runs away from the house $500 to $2,500, a trench drain across the garage apron $900 to $2,600, and a contrasting soldier course border $14 to $26 per linear foot. Sealing is optional, at $1.20 to $2.50 per sq ft from year two. Our driveway cost guide has the full line items.
The base under an Oakville driveway
Oakville sits on clay till and a level clay plain, which holds water and heaves in a hard winter. The base is where a driveway lives or dies:
| Layer | Driveway spec we build to |
|---|---|
| Excavation | 350 - 450 mm below finished grade |
| Geotextile | Over the clay subgrade, every time |
| Granular A base | 250 - 350 mm, compacted in 100 mm lifts |
| Bedding | 25 mm of HPB, never loose sand |
| Pavers | 80 mm vehicular pavers in a herringbone pattern |
| Edges | Heavy duty restraint spiked every 250 mm |
Ask every quote for excavation depth and Granular A depth in writing. A paver driveway on a patio base will rut. A free utility locate from Ontario Dig Authority is required before digging; allow 5 business days.
Oakville driveway width rules
Under Zoning By-law 2014-014, the maximum driveway width depends on lot frontage:
| Lot frontage | Maximum driveway width |
|---|---|
| 12.0 m or less | 6.0 m |
| Over 12.0 m and under 18.0 m | 50% of the frontage |
| 18.0 m or more | 9.0 m |
Width is measured along the whole length, and any hard surface within 0.6 m counts toward it, so a walkway poured tight to the driveway can push you over. One walkway up to 1.8 m wide may attach on each side. In residential zones the driveway must stay at least 0.6 m from the side lot line, lots under 18 m wide get one driveway, and 35% to 45% of the front yard, depending on zone, must stay soft landscaping. North Oakville is under a different by-law (2009-189), so we check which applies before drawing anything.
The apron, the permit and the curb
The Town's driveway permit procedure makes a permit mandatory for any installation or alteration of a driveway in the right of way, which includes removing, replacing, widening or narrowing the apron. The only exemption is resurfacing an apron with no other change. Apply at least 10 business days ahead, give 48 hours' notice before work starts, and expect a security deposit. The permit lapses after a year.
- Apron widths: 3.5 m for no garage or a single garage, 6.5 m for a double and 9 m for a triple.
- Material: interlock, asphalt or concrete are allowed south of Dundas. North of Dundas, aprons must be concrete.
- Curb cuts: done by a Town-licensed contractor, matched to the driveway width, at the owner's cost.
- Repairs: the risk and expense of an apron in the right of way stays with the owner. If the Town or a utility digs it up, it is restored to its prior condition, and colour differences between new and aged pavers are accepted.
Licensed contractors and the stormwater fee
Oakville licenses landscaping contractors, and its definition explicitly includes interlocking stone paving and driveway sealing. The permit application asks for the contractor's Town business licence number, so a contractor without one cannot pull it. Ask for the number with the quote.
Oakville introduced a stormwater fee in 2026, $137 for a single detached home this year rising to $273 in 2028. It does not factor in paved area and residential credits are not offered, so the material you pick does not change it. Permeable pavers are still worth considering where water pools at the garage.
