Quick answer: Installed artificial turf in Oakville costs about $14 to $20 per sq ft for a mid-grade lawn and $20 to $28 for premium or putting green turf in 2026. A 1,000 sq ft premium backyard runs about $20,000 to $28,000. Oakville's Site Alteration By-law 2023-047 counts sod and turf as fill, but exempts work kept at least 0.3 m from the property line that does not change drainage on a neighbour's lot. Oakville's stormwater fee is a flat charge for detached homes, so turf does not raise or lower it.

Oakville turf projects lean toward the high end: putting greens in Glen Abbey and Old Oakville backyards, pool surrounds, and full pet yards for families tired of brown urine spots. The turf itself is the easy part. What makes it last is the base, the edges and getting the drainage right next to the neighbour's fence. Here is what it costs and what the Town rules say.

2026 artificial turf prices in Oakville

Turf grade Installed per sq ft (2026) Best for
Budget $10 - $14 Side yards, rentals, low traffic
Mid-grade, looks like grass $14 - $20 Most front and back lawns
Pet-rated $15 - $22 Dog runs and full pet yards
Premium or putting green $20 - $28 Showpiece yards, putting greens

Each price covers removal of the old lawn, geotextile, a compacted screenings base, edging, turf, infill and seaming. A putting green adds shaped mounds, cups and a tighter, shorter turf, so most land in the premium band. Pool surrounds need a turf rated for wet bare feet and a base graded away from the pool deck. Long curved beds, common on larger lots south of the QEW, add edging: $6 to $12 per linear foot for aluminum.

Pet turf for Oakville dog yards

Pet-rated turf ($15 to $22 per sq ft) has a fully permeable backing so urine drains straight down instead of across the turf to the nearest hole. We pair it with an antimicrobial or zeolite infill that holds ammonia until rain flushes it, and a base deep enough that it does not sour. Plan on a weekly rinse in summer and an enzyme cleaner once a month. Solid waste still gets picked up daily. A small dog run behind a garage often costs more per foot than a whole yard, because the setup is the same.

Faz says: If you have a big dog, put the turf where the dog actually runs, not where the lawn looks worst. Dogs wear a path along the fence and the gate, and that is where the base needs to be strongest.

Oakville's Site Alteration By-law and turf

Oakville's Site Alteration By-law 2023-047 defines fill to include sod and turf, and counts creating impervious surfaces as site alteration. In practice, most backyard turf jobs fall under the by-law's exemptions: work that stays at least 0.3 m from any property line and does not change drainage patterns on another property, topdressing a lawn, and small excavations under 9 m2 and 0.5 m deep. That 0.3 m line is why we finish turf with a narrow gravel or planting strip along a shared fence rather than running it tight to the post. If your project needs regrading near a lot line, we check with the Town before work starts.

Front yards and zoning

Oakville's Zoning By-law 2014-014 defines landscaping as an outdoor area made up of living trees, plants, permeable surfaces, fences and walls, and it does not mention turf. The detached house zones do not set a front yard landscaping percentage; hard surface out front is limited through driveway width (6.0 m on lots with 12 m of frontage or less, 50% of frontage up to 18 m, and 9.0 m above that). Turf in a front yard is not a driveway, but if you plan a large front yard change in North Oakville or a heritage district, ask the Town first.

Stormwater fee and drainage

Oakville's stormwater fee has been on the tax bill since 2026. For detached homes it is $137 in 2026, rising to $273 in 2028, and the Town says it does not factor in what is built or installed on the property. Turf will not change the fee. It will change where water goes if the base is wrong, so we grade 1 to 2% away from the house and toward the swale the lot was designed to drain into.

Heat in Oakville yards

Environment Canada's normals for Pearson, the closest long-term station, show an average July high of 27.1 C and about 16 days a year above 30 C. South-facing Oakville yards with pools and stone patios get hot. We use lighter blades and cooling infill there, and keep turf back from low-E windows, which can reflect enough sun to melt fibres and void the warranty.

Every install starts with a free locate through Ontario Dig Authority, at least 5 business days before we dig.

Where we install turf in Oakville
